I Stole this

Ok, I am going to start out by saying that I stole this blog. But it raises a good question and I would like to get everyone’s take on it. I commented to the original post but it was an old post so probably not going to get a response. So here it is .....Sorry Brady wherever you are.

How do you define God as being omnipotent? Do you simply state that God can do everything and leave it at that to explain itself? There is a problem with doing that. The problem being in the factor of evil. Can God sin? Can God do evil? These are questions that come up if you only say that God can do everything. So how do you answer those questions if you say God can do everything?

My comment was : I am new to the whole philosophy thing but I would say that GOD can do anything and everything. I do believe if God wanted to he could sin and he could do evil. I believe that the fact that he has the power to do these things and chooses not to is what makes him the awesome God that he is.

I would enjoy reading your answers to this question

I don't think God can be tempted by evil or engage in evil. See the first chapter of James.

Further, the Old Testament is clear that God had violent reactions to evil. When he came in contact with evil, people died.

I think there are a few things God cannot do, act against his character is chief among them.

I would concur with burrojoe...he stole my passage of Scripture.

However, I would argue also that omnipotence is not, by definition, the the ability to do anything and everything. Omnipotence by definition is a characteristic of being all powerful. God has supreme power over all things in the world and the universe, including the power over sin and death.

I often have this discussion with people who would like to say omnipotence is the ability to do everything. It is an attribute of God that defines Him as being all powerful, not an attribute defining Him to do everything and anything.

If God was capable of sinning, what would make him HOLY? The fact that he is without sin makes him the awesome God that he is. We are put on this earth to glorify God and enjoy him, we wouldn't be able to glorify or worship an entity that was capable of sin. The fact that he came to earth and was tempted in every way we are makes him even more of an awesome and worthy God. He was tempted and yet didn't sin, he chose not to. He can't because He is the HOLY GOD!

I say omnipotent is "God is all powerful" almighty: having unlimited power.
I see God in this context as greater than sin. Far beyond sin.
God defines good and evil because He is the standard, so if sin is "estrangement from God" as one definition puts it, Sin to me is everything God is not.
